Hemmings Motor - 1973 AMC Matador cop car (Anarchy!!!)

I wonder if the seller of this 1973 AMC Matador cop car chose that photo location on purpose? Was he just looking for an appropriately gritty background in an attempt to emulate Los Angeles? Is he making commentary on AMC’s traditional underdog status and correlating that to an inability to keep the peace? Is he trying to juxtapose a symbol of law and order against a symbol of lawlessness in a statement on the futility to suppress human design? From the seller’s description:

Love for the Colonnade? Koch’s 1974 Buick Regal driving impressions last month brought it out; let’s see if today’s HFOD, a four-speed 1974 Pontiac Grand Am, offered for $15,000 out of Hopkinton, Massachusetts, does the same. From the seller’s description:

Hemmings Motor News - Dodge RPU from “The Lively Set”

While it would’ve been nice to find a car from one of Elvis’s movies to celebrate his birthday today (such as this one), I’ll take the next best thing: the 1923 Dodge roadster pickup from “The Lively Set,” currently for sale on Hemmings.com for $150,000. From the seller’s description:

Driven by Doug McClure in the movie with stunt driving by Mickey Thompson. Featured in Popular Hot Rodding Jan. ‘63, Hot Rod Magazine Dec. ‘63, and Car Craft (cover) Jan. ‘64. Fresh frame off restoration This is a rare opportunity to acquire a piece of Hot Rod history. Mentioned in the Ken Gross/Robert Genat book “Hot Rod Milestones” pg. 50. Built by Joe Pirronello, a San Diego Prowlers member, in the late fifties. As stated in Hot Rod, Joe got the urge to build something sneaky after seeing Norm Grabowski’s and Tommy Ivo’s cars. Mecum’s Kissimmee auction is scheduled for later this month, and the folks at Mecum wanted to make sure you knew what all they’re selling in Florida, so they listed just about their entire inventory on Hemmings.com. Hemmings Motor News - Pontiac Banshee

Oft misstated fact of the day: John DeLorean didn’t want to copy the Corvette with the Pontiac Banshee. Yes, he wanted a two-seater sports car, but he didn’t want it to be an American-style nose-heavy V-8 sports car; instead, he wanted a European-style lithe small little thing with the OHC six that he championed. You could see this yourself, in person, if you bought the Banshee prototype currently for sale on Hemmings.com by 2 Shores Classic Cars. From 2 Shores’s description:

The Banshee was suppose to be scrapped but GM employee convinced GM to sell him the car. The car was driven less than 1500 miles and only brought to car shows. The owner passed away in 2006 and put the banshee on the market. This is the only 1964 Banshee coupe in the world, with sweeping hood and short deck styling. 2,200 pounds fiberglass body over steel underbody. The styling cues influenced GM cars in the future like the 1968 Corvette, and many future GM products to come. This rare car is all original just the way the prototype was developed.

Didja dig TA’s recent post on the annual C- and D-Type Tour? Then you’ll probably also dig one of the more recent cars to show up on Hemmings.com, an LR D-Type replica, built in 2006. From the seller’s description:

Hemmings Motor News - Only 78 days till spring!

I was grateful this morning because it was nearly 20 degrees when I stepped outside, so I didn’t have to scrape the car off or steer with one hand while using the other to hold the door shut because the latch was frozen. The other night, I saw a TV commercial for Stratton Mountain Resort showing people having fun in the snow. Instead, I thought of something nicer: Our fourth annual Hemmings New England Concours d’Elegance at Stratton is only a few months away. Honest.

So let me leave just a little bit of a taste of the bass from the 2009 concours’ muscle invitees to all you good people in the Hemmings Nation, along with a hearty “stay warm.” Spring’s coming. The 2010 concours weekend is set for July 16 through 18 at Stratton, and the featured classes will be Bentley, Buick Roadmaster, Citroën, Corvair, V-12 Lincoln and Indian Motorcycle.

In 1969, when Terry Ehrich, then a 27year-old advertising manager at The New York Review of Books, bought Hemmings Motor News with several other investors, the modest monthly was selling about 30,000 copies and grossing $250,000 annually. Today, after Ehrich has built the magazine into what's come to be known as "the bible of the car-collector hobby market," it sells nearly 265,000 copies a month and grosses more than $20 million annually

Each of those copies of the magazine, which at 800-plus pages looks more like a telephone book, is crammed with about 20,000 advertisements, offering anything a car hobbyist could want.

A recent issue advertised everything from a 1932 Rolls-Royce Henley roadster (for $650,000) to a wheel-bearing set for a Model T Ford ($55) to a 1966 Volkswagen Beetle that needed "tinkering" ($3,200). As car buffs have learned, if you can't find it in Hemmings, it probably doesn't exist.

What's the secret of Ehrich's success? The soft-spoken, self-effacing publisher and editor in chief of one of American publishing's healthiest cash cows says the magazine has grown merely by riding the popularity of car collecting and restoring through the past three decades.

"I'm just a mediocre jockey on a helluva horse," says Ehrich, 57, in his comfortable, antique-filled office in Bennington, Vt.

Hemmings Motor News - All-Chrysler Carlisle

I’m still digging through the stack of material that simply didn’t make print, and this week I bring you some more scenes from the 2009 All-Chrysler Nationals at Carlisle.

Held back on July 10-12, Hemmings Muscle Machines editor Terry McGean and I worked our way through a mid-summer storm, photographed two cars that have since been featured – Mannix Dart (issue #75, December 2009) and a 1967 Plymouth Hemi GTX (issue #74, November 2009) – and scoped out the car show, car corral and swap meet in a quest to find more feature material. If you’ve never been, the Mopar fans really know how to put on a mid-summer meet. Next year’s dates are set for July 9-11, 2010.

Hemmings Motor News a good source for El Camino

Byline: Paul Brian Dear Paul: I have a 1987 El Camino Super Sport with approximately 50,000 miles with a Choo Choo conversion. What is it worth? Also, I have programs and magazines from the Indianapolis 500 from 1939 through the '40s, are they worth anything? Harold. Dear Harold: As for the value of your El Camino, you're looking for a pretty specific buyer.

My advice is to start with buying a few editions of "Hemmings Motor News" that you'll be able to find at most good bookstores. You'll get a feel from them as to its worth and then you can set a price and see what happens. Your Indy 500 memorabilia sounds like it's ripe for listings on E Bay. I know I've found a few "Silver Badges" from the 500 online to round out my own collection. Dear Paul:
